View Full Version : The Grudge. . .

..and why you shouldn't see it.
So I just got back from seeing the Grudge and I have to say it was one of the worst movies I've seen in a very long time.
First of all, If you haven't seen "Ju-On" I suggest you get it. I'd try ebay or something. I'm rarely freaked by horror movies, but this one actually managed to pull it off. Even if you don't find it creepy, the visual and story alone are worth watching it for imo.
It uses sublety and visuals to mess with you rather than the "american way" of "things popping out with chainsaws and blood everywhere". Its an interesting watch at the least.
The American remake mutilated, butchered and totally changed the original. Granted, I can see having to change it somewhat for american audiences. Its been done before in other movies and worked fine, so I'm not against altering it. This, however, was not an adaptation, it was a massacre. I'm sorry, but what does Sarah Michelle Gellar making out with her hairy boyfreind have to do with anything? And I was rather peeved that it had to explain (in just about every case) why there were white people in japan (b/c of work, moved with family, transfer students, etc..). Adding in a bunch of random bullshit that had nothing to do with anything isn't the only thing wrong with this movie.
In the original "Ju-On" there were time jumps and different chapters with different people. In the remake they pretty much cut out all of that (along with a good amount of the characters). There was ONE flashback scene and majority of the people in the theater were confused as all hell and had no idea what was going on (They didn't even realise the older woman was the same person as 5 minutes ago). It wasn't until i whispered (somewhat loudy) that it was a flashback that the people surrounding us said "oh, its a flashback!". -_-
This just proves my belief that a good portion of american movie goers are complete idiots even more.
Honestly..what about a little boy meowing makes you feel the need to scream at the top of your lungs?
The only satisfaction I got out of this movie was laughing hysterically at the people in the theater. One girl even spilt her drink.
The original requires you to pay close attention to the little details, I guess american audiences can't stay focused enough/stop and think enough to figure things out themselves. Tom said it best "there needs to be flashing text on the bottom of the screen saying that this is a flashback for these people".
Whats that? You wanted a SCARY movie?
Well sorry kids, you wont find that here. There wasn't a single remotly creepy moment in the entire film sadly enough. I know, I know "The trailer looked kinda cool". I know, I thought it wouldn't be that bad either. I was wrong. Its atrailer, of course they're going to take the most interesting looking visuals in the movie and string them all together to make you want to see it. They revealed the ghost way too fast (like 5 minutes into the movie). The movie just moved very very slow in general.
I would have made a poll, but I could not justify putting it up unless it had these three options:
"No"
"Hell No"
and
"Teh suck"
All in all, I highly reccomend "Ju-On" and pray that you never have to waste ten bucks seeing "The Grudge".
If you MUST see it, watch the original first and wait for a rental, thats my 2 cents.

i wish i had gotten a chance to warn people about the ring like this. if you see the american one first it ruins the original because you know what's coming at the end...by the time i knew it was out, most people i knew had gone out to see the ring. ._.; at least it doesn't give away the storyline seeing as how it was COMPLETELY changed.
i wasn't interested in watching the grudge anyway, sarah michelle gellar just reminds me of buffy every time i look at her. @_@; they were in japan? that's kinda funny.

i didnt like the ring at all. i thought it was all crap. i thought it was just plain stupid, but the grudge....yeah, the trailors looked cool but thats what trailors do, like Stax said. they only get the most interesting crap and throw it all in there to make it seem cool. I think that The Grudge looks stupid, although my sister and my cuzin wanna see it, i should tell them to see " Ju-On " first.......

I liked the ring XD. There were a few things they screwed up (the entire climax of the movie and the videotape for example) but I liked everything else about it. ^_^" It wasn't hella slow like the original, but in the original when Sadako finally shows up its friggin awesome.
But yeah, The Grudge isn't even good as its own seprate movie.

I make it a point to never pay to see these "scariest movie ever" movies. They all end in disappointment. The Ring, The Grudge (though i haven't seen it), Blair Witch, the list goes on. I'm also kinda confused at this recent trend of turning J-Horror (I'm witty!) movies into american horror. The japanese, though i've never met them (but i hear they're prety chill), have a much different view of horror then us americans do. So hollywood, please do us a favorite, and stop being teh suck

what i like about japanese horror, or whatever you wish to call it, it's that it relies on the role that superstition plays in people to scare you. in japan superstition isn't brushed away as easily as it is here...so a movie like ringu was the perfect thing to keep you scared even days after seeing the movie. it was too slow for (some) american viewers, but it creeped the HELL out of me for a long time without having to pop things out at every corner. ^^;;
if ju-on would do the same thing, i'll definitely have to get ahold of it soon.

the japanese version of the ring is FAR more scarier than the american version.
beacuse we screw horror movies up somtimes
because some of the far more twisted people who make horror people are not from the US in my opinion. :D

The Ring is probably my favorite horror movie(s) of all-time. Not scariest; just my favorite. But I actually prefer the US one to the Japanese one.

Well the Director that made Ju-On made The Grudge (american version) so he could have said "no this sucks lets re-do it" although he didn't speak english. He could have always said "this isn't what i planned or wanted" so no need to blame anyone but the director (and i bet it sucks cuz it said if you liked the ring you'll love the grudge)

I just saw "The Grudge" and I was frightened. Sure, it could've been scarier, but I personally am not going to bed tonight. I think you guys are just being J-elitists. ::meow::

I don't want to start some sort of war, but I read the entire thread already. The movie was creepy. Maybe I just don't go see enough creepy movies, or maybe I'm some sort of big sissy-face. But I found the movie creepy. And the movie really didn't suck, especially if you don't try to compare it (as all J-elitists love to do) to the original Japanese version.
Perhaps the director understood that American people are too stupid to understand a whole lot of flashbacks and time jumps. I knew I understood the various flashbacks, connections between characters and stuff, but my friends didn't even get it. They didn't even follow the simple stuff. I had to explain to them on multiple occasions what exactly was going on.
Don't get too angry at me for this.

Thank you, for being my hero of the internet. Notice that The Grudge was based on Ju-On. I enjoyed the movie, so I guess I'm weird or something =/

I suggested you read the thread again because you are unfairly, and without good reason, referring to people as elitists when thats cleary not the case.
I could care less about arguing about the movie, thats just stupid. I thought it sucked. big friggin deal. If you liked it, whatever. *shrugs*

Dude, this does nothing but show you as a stupid ignoramus. "You're wrong." You just told people that they were wrong because of their opinions. Tell me, sir. How can someone's opinion be wrong? You're essentially saying "You don't really think that movie is good/that movie sucked." Next time, think before you speak.
Thank you, that is all. -Skitters off-

Unforunatly I did waste the money to go see it in theaters, But later I also decided to buy the Ju-On DVD at Newbury Comics, and I must say it is far superior to the american version in every way possible.

I thought the scariest thing about the Grudge was Buffy attempting to speak and butchering simple Japanese phrases! Almost as scary as Rob Brown making original recipe chicken for KFC The horror!!
