It is my opinion, that without a doubt, old school NES was, and still is the best gaming system. While atari may have introduced the home gaming market, it was the Nintendo Entertainment System that really created the boom, and popularity for gaming systems.
So I ask you all (particularly the ones who started off on the NES), what are your experiences with the NES.
Mine was Kid Icarus. I was only three and I saw my uncle playing it. I called it the "eyeball game" becuase the monsters I saw looked like flying eyeballs. I wanted to play, and when I got a turn, I was hooked. People thought I was a video game prodigy. Hah, I played soo much.
I beat my first game before I entered school, Super Mario Brothers, I was 3 and a half. Soon after that, I discoverd metroid. This was the most difficult game I had played. It took me almost two years before I beat it, probably why it's one of my favorites. I used to just play NES all day, people would call my house asking for tips and how to beat levels, it was awesome.
I regret selling half my NES games to get an n64..... I still have about 60 though, my favorites of which are SMB3, Tetris, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and Dragon Warrior.
Speaking of dragon warrior, I got a funny story about that game. I got it for free by renewing my subscription to Nintendo Power. I couldn't read at the time, so I didn't really know what I was doing, but I managed, somehow. Those damn Magicians would always kill me, and the music scared me at the time. I would get nightmares that those guys would come up to my bed and set me on fire, keep in mind I was only 5 at the time. I don't think I played that game again till I was 8, hah.
I'm not nearly into gaming as much now as I was in the past, but NES is still the best. It relyed on content and gameplay rather than graphics to make a game fun.
I used to call those fish things that jumped out of the bridges in Mario 1 penguins. Don't really know why, but i called em penguins.
I do love the NES, and i regret every moment that i sold it way back in the day. Someday when i become rich, i'll re-buy everything i've sold back in the day.

How i loved my NES, i played that thing to death...now its all broken, sitting in the corner, with a failed attempt at being made into a computer, only to realize we didn't have the right motherboard in the first place.
I remeber renting Megaman 2 for the first time and getting really pissed because i could never beat Crashman even with the air shooter.

And they wonder why there are green mushrooms on Hot Topic Nintendo shirts.
So... in response, Hot Topic made an emo mushroom and totally ruined it all.

dude...you're young enough to shop at hot topic for that. :p
i don't get why everyone gets so worked up about something being over-used, over-played, over-done...etc. @_@; it's like you're unable to enjoy something unless it's done just right. reminds me of goldilocks. and how did she end up? too picky is what i say...
See, i'm in a mixed boat about it. I was there, i "know my roots". And i bought my zelda jacket/nintendo wallet/know your roots pin at hot topic. But i see kids ALL THE TIME at MFC wearing a nintendo themed something, an they never have played nintendo. I think that children of the 80s should have our nintendo merch, and children of the 90s can have SNES

Well... see, I am a children of both the 80s and 90s, so I love it all.
But I do agree with Abe, if someone is gona wear the shirt, they should have at least played the stuff....
Then again, I am a child of aesthetics as well, if I think something looks cool, I rarely care what is behind it.
So I guess my opinions are mixed and don't really coincide with one another.

Sonic was Sega wasn't it viper? It was a great game....and if I'm not mistaken, there are 2nd hand stores of books, music, and such, that sell nintendo units and Sega as well. My husband bought me a Sega Genesis for christmas a couple years ago, along with Columns, Columns II and Sonic. And I realize it's a really silly girl thing, but I loved Looney Tunes, Lion King, and several other disney games. I'm almost embarressed to admit it...but they were fun and that's what gaming is all about! :froggy:

I never had a Nintendo. I went from Atari to Super Nintendo. On Super Nintendo my favorites were Super Mario Kart, Baseball Simulator 1.000, and Street Fighter II.
I then got an N64. It was too cartoon-ish. There was too much emphasis on graphics and not enough on game-play IMO. I still hold onto it to play Perfect Dark (my current favorite).
Also got a PS2 when they came out but ended up giving it to my sister. The only games we play regularly are the SSX games.
Darius
May 6th, 2004, 10:28
Perfect Dark does Rock, me and my friends still spend too many hours playing that game, but we've converted mainly to Halo for our wants of blowing the ever loving crap out of each other.
ALso, Nikki, Lion king was a good, but hard, Sega game, freakin good for a Disney I have to say.
And I have to say, I'm very happy to see all these old schoolers rockin it up on the boards, you guys make my heart warm and fuzzy, like spring time .... chernobyl....

Ah the memmorys of Lion King, Heh, There was a trifecta killing my brain when I was young anbd playing Genesis:
Earthworm Jim: Music was fantastic and the game got me addicted to that type of game.
Echo the Dolphin: So addicting and the fact that I never beat it makes me angry to this day. Although I will find it online somewhere, Neone selling a copy?
ToeJam & Earl: First rhythm game I ever played (Possibly the first rhythm game ever) Although Punch out did involve rhythm, Just not musical rhythm. But ya, TJ&E was deffinatly the game that had the most Replay value of the 3, Acctually I still find myself playing it these days for nostalgia purposes and just to have some fun.

=O
Toejam and Earl, oh man, I remember that game...
My and my best friend used to sit around for hours playing it, and then came Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkatron....
Such good stuff. I need to dig back into the old school bag and see what I can dig out and start playing that stuff again, some of it tops most games that come out today, and that makes me happy

I think I've had every game system since the Atari, and played most of them until the controllers would break (which never took long). Nintendo was the best IMO, except for I would constantly ruin those large cartridge games by spilling crap in them :)

I too am a child of the 80's/90's. (I turned 11 around 1998).I love and still have my NES. I have a collection of 98 games, and still growing. I May bring them by someday (when I get a Car). I am mixed on the "Hot Topic issue". I do own an Atari Jacket. I beleive its the age that determines if you can wear that stuff properly.
Coming soon at Hot Topic: More Deffered Childhood Memories.

Here's an off-topic question. When I'm making the TGA t-shirts, would you guys like to see sprited material and other old school games on them? Maybe a sprited version of a IIDX or DDR machine?

being the little girl of the family, i would always be the one getting barbies ._.; so the first console i owned that was mine and ONLY mine was my ps2 (and my brother got an xbox). before that, my brother was always the one that got the systems as a gift...and the games...so he'd share with me.
finally around the time i was 13, i think, they bought us a nintendo 64 that was supposed to be for both of us....but my brother ended up keeping it. so i cherish my ps2! ;-;

Nintendo is awesome. I still have mine w/ most of my games. Unfortunatly the system doesn't work (I took it aprt to clean it and think I forgot a screw or something b/c the game thing wont stay down)..Its around here somewhere... I still have my gun and controllers also (I have the sudden urge to turn one of them into a Captian N belt buckle).
I had an atari before that as well, and before that I had a coleco vision.
Anyways, back to NES..anyone ever play Life Force? I was so hooked on that game, I'd play it constantly. I was really big on Mario games as well (luckily my SNES still works and I have all-stars). I remember when Mario 3 first came out and everyone was hella stoked about it. I felt so lucky when I actually found a copy in to rent at the video store ( I lived in out in east bumfuck of Coventry and we only had this tiny crap rental place). Megaman kicked ass too, as did Castlevania, Bionic commando, Zelda, and a bunch of others I can't think of right now.

Isn't Life Force that scrolling shooter where you fly with an overhead view over various terrain and then side-scroll inside some monster?
Or is that Legendary Wings?
Wait; yeah, that is. Life Force is some Gradius type game. But I know I HAVE played it.
That AND Wings. =p
Stax Kazama
June 1st, 2004, 01:24
Yeah.. its a side view and its a scrolling game (although you can move around and stuff). It could be two players..one ship was red and the other was blue. You had to fly around in like this alien world or something. I know i still have that one somewhere..I need to fix my NES dammit.

Just get an emulator. It lacks the happy cartridge feel, but there's no real way to securely play most NES games, since a working NES is rare these days.
