View Full Version : Ok, fine I will bite. Why are the SSBM tournament rules so retarded?

I have to know.
Why is the standard tournament enviornment based on 1v1, Final Destination no items? Is the rest of the game that broken or what? I'm not trying to bust on smash any more than it already has been, I just have to know why its like that.
Call it curiosity.

its so people win on skills and not by dumb luck
its 1v1 so that its a fair fight and no one gangs up on each other (or runs away and stands in the corner)
its final destination becuase its the most neutral area thats just floating platform (and nothing like other stages where you could die simply from the stage itself)
its no items well.... so whoever wins wins on skills and not because he accidently hits a bomb when he charges up his attack

Do you think, in your opinion, this takes away the unique aspects of the game in some way?
It seems to me that this "sanitizes" game down to same shit, different day that every other fighter becomes and is. I mean if matches were played in sets, wouldnt skill overpower the random factor?
I mean as another example, Texas Hold-em is a hugely popular game and is acknowledged as hugely random as well... but in more sets of games, more skill comes through overall and the more skillfull player will win the higher percentage of games.
Your explanation cleared up my basic assessment, but brought me to many more questions.

I suppose like.... we're talking about a tourney aspect and not in a fun aspect
its a great party game and is unique with all the items/different levels and such
but int a tournament i dont think people want to deal with worrying about catching up with icicle mountain or deal with bunch of random items popping up
its a great party game overall and is unique but when we are talking about tournament aspects.....
it has to be fair or equal on both sides instead of making it on purely luck
or this would cause in people just blaming the game and not blaming their skills and probably would lose the competitive aspects to the game

That makes sense. I guess I also don't really understand how pervasive the items and stages make the tournament element (as I've only a passing familiarity with the system). Thanks for responding, any other insight on it would be appreciated.

well for one thing the pokeball is probably one of the best items to get because of the random pokemon it kinda throws at people
that and if you get hit they are pretty strong/does a lot of damage
the game in itself is unique but at tournaments its just a given that items are turned off and some stages shouldnt be accessible
like i said its because tournaments are usually meant to measure skill levels of people and so its generally perceived that items favor the user who gets it and its done by random luck

I could honestly care... the developers put it in the game because not all games are fair... their is a genuine balance in everything being random... if you get saved by a pokeball of bbb, thats just it... in all fighting games their is that element of randomness, whether it be a wall or external force... and besides... every character has the ability to block, dodge, and deflct any item so good players wont even be affected by it... so whatever... just a bunch of whiners in a party game to me...

It's not just Final Destination.
The tourney levels are Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Pokemon Stadium, Fountain of Dreams, and Dreamland 64. Those are the neutral stages for the tourney. There are a bunch of non-neutral stages that the player can counterpick.
And items suck. Bawls.

Have you ever seen a smash tourney at all? When I just started in the scene I asked the same questions but as I got more into the scene it made more sense to just ban certain levels because of what certain characters can do. Rather than ban the character they banned the level.
I am spic tom just so you know if you don't but I thought about having a items tourney and make it just $2 entry fee.
