[Tournament] SSBM Championship *Updated*

Okay everybody! We have a date, we have details, and we have two new tournament tiers to add! On June 12, TGA will be sponsoring its first Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament! The following thread will be used for registration, details on rules as well as any final questions coming into the final days before the tournament.

Logistics
From the looks of it, the whole store will be dedicated to this tournament. What we do need are controllers, GameCubes, and televisions. If you can supply any of these items, please get in contact with myself or Andy through PM as soon as possible. The entry fee will be $10 for which includes the tournament entry fee plus the usual TGA flat rate. It will be $5 to enter just the tournament, but you must pay-per-play if you want to use any of the other machines.

There is no word on a grand prize as of yet, as soon as we get word from Andy, we will update this thread.

You may spread word of this tournament to other forums and to your friends, but PLEASE keep the registrations to this thread as it will be the master list. If there are competitors that wish to enter but are not a member of the forums, they do not have to sign up, but please PM me the names and handles so I can update this thread, you can also have them email me at tournaments@tokyogameaction.com with their name and the events they wish to sign up for. If I do not get an email, then the person didn't enter.

Again, people can bring their own controllers, but non-stock controllers may or may not be allowed (controllers can not have any auto-fire, slow-motion, or programmable features). No wireless controllers either (interference, another point of failure with the batteries, and a slight security hazard).

The staff and coordinators reserve the right to make any changes to the rules without any prior notice, including the day of the tournament, depending on situations that present themselves.


The Rules
One-on-One Tournament
(Please forward questions to Dipstick.)

This portion of the tournament is one on one, double elimination. A match is best two out of three games. A single game is to three lives (or six minutes). If a game goes to time, the winner is first determined by the number of lives remaining. If they are equal, then the person who has a lower damage percentage at the end wins (and sudden death is not played). If the damage percentages are equal, then sudden death is used to determine the winner.

All items are to be disabled.

As for stage selection, the following stages shall be available to be randomly chosen: Final Destination, Battlefield, Fountain of Dreams, Kirby 64, Yoshi's Story and Pokemon Stadium. There is also a secondary set of stages that can be picked, but will not come up randomly: Kongo Jungle 64, Corneria, Poke Floats, Rainbow Cruise, and Mute City.

For the first game of a match, characters are freely chosen and the stage is selected randomly. For all games after that, the loser of the previous game can opt to change their character and stage (from the aforementioned lists). However, the same stage can NOT be played twice in any given match.

Free-For-All Tournament

This portion of the tournament is a 4 player free for all. Each match will be played out for 6 minutes and the top 2 people move on to the next round. The logistics follow the 1v1 tournament explained above. If a game goes to time, the winner is first determined by the number of lives remaining. If they are equal, then the person who has a lower damage percentage at the end wins (and sudden death is not played). If the second spot is disputed, then sudden death will be played between the two to determine who will move on.

Items will be kept on except for all health restoring, star and ba-bombs. Please see the 1v1 tournament rules for stage selection as they will also apply to this section of the tournament.

Team Tournament

This portion of the tournament is a 2-on-2 team match. Each match will be played out for 6 minutes and the winning team will move on to the next round. The logistics follow the 1v1 tournament explained above. If a game goes to time, the winner is first determined by the teams total number of lives remaining. If they are equal, then the team members with the highest damage percentages will be compared and the member who has a lower damage percentage at the end wins.

Items will be kept on except for all health restoring, star and ba-bombs. Please see the 1v1 tournament rules for stage selection as they will also apply to this section of the tournament.

Is it five dollars for all three tournaments? That is a little cheap, and nonsensical in the case of teams.

Is the FFA tournament only one game per match? If not, how would multiple games work?

They are, but I want to have as complete a list as possible, because I'll be setting up a scoring worksheet and everything like that. Also, I want to get a good headcount for Andy of who is coming. It's pretty much logistics Chris.

I don't know if Billy will be there that night, but he technically came up with the other two events. The 1v1 event is yours, but if Billy doesn't come, it is all yours to run that day.

Well, I'd think "on". It'd add a lot of fun and strategy to the battle, but get back to me on what your research turns up.

I don't know if I am coming... and I wish I could. I have access to 2 gamecubes, 4 controllers, 2 copies of smash bros. melee, 2 mem cards with full saves, 2 TVs, and such... but, like I said, I have no access to ride up there with a big ass truck or anything in peticular. I would be happy to help, but it requires me to plan a crapload... Sorry :(

there's this...

$5 for the first two [tournaments] ($8 for both) and $6 for the team event ($3 a person)

but i don't think it has been set as the final (meaning, official) fee. it's still sorta being discussed it seems, but you can take it as an approximation.

as for the controllers, you don't HAVE to bring your own controller, but it would be appreciated! ^^ we're asking people to bring controllers, tv's, gamecubes and such so that more people can participate in the tournament at one time, rather than having the tournament last all day with everybody in line to play on a single console. if you decide to bring your own things, you might wanna stick a piece of tape on them and write your name on it, or put a sticker of some sort on it so you can identify it as yours. sometimes things do get a little mixed up during the craziness of the day!

Super Smash Brother’s Melee Tournament Information.

Because of the recent purchase of PF 9, I am going to have to go with my original plan of the $15 for the entry fee, flat rate and the tournament. 100% of the proceeds (minus prizes) will go to pay back the June rent money which was used in paying for the machine.

Hey, this is Matt. Thanks for hosting this event you guys. It was great to play smash against some new competition. If anyone wants to play me and Chris again, just let us know and we'll try and make it down.

BTW, I believe we took an extra controller home that wasn't ours. So if anyone (I think it might be the TGA's) is missing a black one let me know and I'll bring it back there next week or so.

Even if there are two players that are completely equal (which is never true), someone would have to come out on top. I just like tourny style cuz it's very DBZ-martial-arts-tournament like. And since I can't really fly or fire Kamehameha waves, I might as well pretend I can in a video game. (I'm so physically inactive...=( ) But yeah, good job to everyone who entered.

As far as tournies every week...well...it sounds like a cool idea, but I think I'd be chronically <---(prolly wrong use of word) poor after one month. Unless I was, like, Bill Gates or Donald Trump...or Craz... =P
