View Full Version : DDR: Forever Tournaments 3/25

March 11th, 2006, 18:05
As a means to raise some money for the store before the month's end, and the Big Project starts rolling, we will be holding a pair of tournaments on the 25th, two weeks from today. Entance into either tournament is $5, with the payment of a flat rate to the arcade for the day ($20, for a total of $25). All tournament entry money is going into the pot, and our overhead is covered by the flat rates, so anything you put in will go back to you guys somehow :) Rules are as follows:
DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION TOURNAMENT
The first tournament will be a classic DDR PA tournament.
Playable Songs: Our machine will have ONLY songs that are found on official DDR mixes for this tournament ( This will include home versions, but it won't be entirely obscure, i.e., Dancing Stage feat. True Kiss Destination and stuff like that =P )
Qualification: Entrants will be qualified by playing a song TBA at the time of the tournament. Number of qualifying players will be chosen based on attendance.
Match Structure: Matches will be 2 rounds out of 3, and first song choice goes to the higher seeder. Third songs will be chosen using Random.
Song Choice: No song may be chosen more than once by a player during the course of the tournament.
Scoring: We will be scoring based on DDR's Dance Point system, the same way any machine would dole out your grade normally, with Marvelous removed for the tournament:
Perfects: +2
Great: +1
Good: 0
Boo: -4
Miss: -8
The machine will be set to percentage based score display, and the winner will be declared based on that Dance Point percentage, as that number reflects exactly what is listed above to the tenth of a percent.
Song failure will cause a song loss for any player failing that song.
Modifiers: To start with, any modifiers that are not part of DDR Extreme's system will be disabled (most prominently, constant BPM mods).
Since our machine does not force note skin choices to be used on both players, we will allow freedom of note skin use.
Modifiers that change the orientation of the notes ( Left, Right, Shuffle, Little, Mirror ) are allowed on the basis that both players agree to their use and that both players use whichever are chosen with the exception of Little, which will be disallowed.
Visual modifiers ( Dark, Hidden, Sudden, Stealth ) are allowed on the same basis as above with the exception of Stealth, which is disallowed.
Speed modifiers are allowed.
DDR: FOREVER ORIGINALS TOURNAMENT
The Originals tournament will be structured roughly the same as the DDR tournament, with a few addendums to the rules.
Playable Songs: ONLY Original songs will be playable for the DDR:F Tournament. This basically means any song we have that is not in an arcade or home version of DDR. If a song that has made it to a home version or arcade version that has entirely different steps from the official version (i.e., Dokurorider's Zero-One versus Ultramix 2's Zero-One) it will be playable.
Scoring: Marvelous will be re-added for this tournament, and will be worth 3 points in addition to the above scoring. This is how official DDR tallies Marvelous in its scoring convention.
Modifiers: Any modifier that would disqualify you from ranking on our machine is not allowed. This is noted by the message "YOU WILL NOT RANK" shown on the side of the screen after a mod's selection.
PRIZES:
Prizes for both tournaments are a percentage of the total entry fees collected:
1st place: 50%
2nd place: 35%
3rd place: 15%
4th place: 1 (One) Snickers© Bar :D
Entry will start at noon when the store opens, and will end at 1 pm when the DDR tournament will start. Entry into the Originals tournament will extend until an hour after the DDR tournament ends, which will be when the Originals tournament starts. Times are subject to change, primarily based on attendance.
I have tried my best to be sure that these rules are comprehensive and easily understood. If there is anything that anyone feels is wrong here, please let me know and I will address it as best I can, if I feel it is necessary. I am, however, set on these rules, and as they stand now are basically final.
The pad conditions as of late have been very good, and I intend to make sure they are working as well as they can be for the event. If something should go wrong during the tournament I will do my best to fix it immediately.
This event is a precursor of great things to come involving DDR:F, so keep checking back here for more information on that. We intend to start having regular events and a solid rankings board up here, with regular rewards for consistent and good players, and when things are settled with the Big Project, you can expect these things to start rolling soon after, so anyone who's interested should come play, and support TGA through this. Thanks a lot!

I would like to provide some insight.
Any modifiers that Increase or Decrease the number of Arrows, Freeze Arrows, Mines, or Jumps in the song, will be qualified by the MACHINE as Disqualification, by the rules, I see that thats the same situation, so if the message "YOU WILL NOT RANK" appears on your side of the screen, it should mean that those mods will not qualify.

Whose permission do I need to use the 'bar' modifer? With shuffle both my opponent and I have to agree to it. With speed mods and note colors I can set my own preferences out of the ones available. And the bar is like a speed mod?
The rule that lets a judge "Dragon Quest" somebody for slacking off during a 15 footer seems kind of arbitrary. I like it, but why not build a separate songlist for each of the two tournaments? That way you don't have to worry about playing the wrong Zero-One either.

Catastrophe: The songs WILL be separated from each other during each tourney, actually. You'll only be able to pick from the DDR stuff for the first one because the originals will be removed, and vice versa. I just wanted to get the clarification made that those songs would not get nerfed for the Originals side. When I say playable, I don't just mean that that's what your choice will be limited to, I mean that's the choice that will be forced by the machine. The modifiers are the same way with regards to "DDR mods" and SM mods, illegal mods will simply be removed in the DDR side.
The bar is only limited by those song levels listed, not by any judge decision. If there's a majority that would rather have it the whole time, then I'm flexible. I don't particularly see it as necessary for use on 8 footers and below, but I also realize that the whole bar thing has been a controversy since the dawn of Bemani, and if it would cause problems then I'd rather just let it go. There are those tournaments that just tell you to keep your hands off it altogether, I wanted to be flexible.
I do think you may be right about the arbitrary nature of judging on someone's effort during a particularly hard song, as one could possibly misjudge that on the fly. I think the answer may be to simply lower the life difficulty for the Original tournament... I guess that would take failure out of the picture for the most part, and I'd rather be judging by accuracy in any case.
diekatze88: True, I just missed that point. Rules edited.

The timing windows on the machine have always been in question, and I don't really expect them to stop being so, but I can assure anyone who plans to play that the windows, at this point after months of tweaking, are as close to DDR's windows as they're going to get without being too difficult to be able to play on at all. No one in recent times has had any problems with the timing settings whether they be beginners or PA masters. If you may initially have problems, then it should only take a little bit of playing to get used to it. If there are any questions about it, you can post here or PM me, whichever. I just wanted to take the opportunity to clear that up for anyone who may have had reservations about the subject. Thanks.

Bar= a mod? The bar is clearly part of the machine, it should be allowed for anyone to use. I'm just more comfortable using the bar now after playing ITG, could this rule be overturned?? I don't really think it gives anyone an upperhand on anything less than a ten...it's merely a preference.

I agree with Hoover actually. The bar isn't a mod, it's a safety device. I personally like to keep one hand on the bar at certain times. It's just a comfort / habit.

so uh, how many people are we expecting for these tournaments? Just want to see if I really want to come down. 10 people turnout isn't that fun.

Yes, unfortunately some of us sad saps would prefer to make a few hundred bucks a week by way of having a job, whereas you would prefer to win fifty bucks every month playing ddr. Good point though, you showed me.

Fair enough, I figured the bar thing would be a touchy subject and I figured more people would rather have it then not. Not my personal preference but this isn't for me, it's for you guys, so I'm gonna remove that bit of ruling. My feeling was that the way the game was played over time developed in a way that made it required use for some songs at times, but not really for most. In essence saying that way back when in 6th mix, Max 300 was Konami's first answer to its use in the first place. Then that wasn't good enough, so out came MaxX, and it went from there until we saw ITG as the only challenge in dance games to people because of what I've found to be, regardless of use by even myself a lot of times, a bad habit. If it's gonna make this a poor turnout though, I'd rather allow it for those playing since, like I said, this isn't for me, it's for you. And Garret, I think you know I wouldn't penalize someone for not wanting to fall over and grabbing at it, that's just silly =P
To summarize, I concede, rules edited. I think they should be fair enough at this point.

No, actually it wasn't my point, but your pathetic attempt to be witty. Plz do try again. I must say I haven't really played ddr in a very long time, but since everyone in NE except for 2 people completely suck it doesn't matter how long I haven't played for, I'd still win.
lol, you must hate me for no apparent reason. All I did was inquire about how many people were going + as I recall my past visits to TGA I've been very kind to anyone I've met. I guess when your single, have utterly no hope attracting the opposite sex, and a complete moron you tend to become bitter towards others and lash out by your only means of contacting the human race, the internet forum.
If you have a problem with me, bring it up with me or Andy, but I'd think everyone would agree not to bring your battles here. With that said, contact me personally if you continue to have an issue.

Thank you. I appreciate your efforts for changing the rule. I would like to see this as a big turnout as well, namely to help support TGA and all they've done to support their customers.

Clearly you hit the nail right on the head. Because you know me quite intimately, as I've met you all of twice. The simple fact of the matter is I enjoy being an asshole. It's who I am. I can't help the fact that I'm obviously a virgin with no friends who's only connection to the outside world is my internet connection, and I feel the need to pick on kids in a Bemani forum in order to make myself feel like I have a big penis. Are my motives that transparent? *cut* Nah though, I'll drop it for the sake of the thread, and hopefully make it clear that I was only fucking with you, lest the DDR mafia seek me out and beat me up, as us greasy, pimply , hentai addicted forum geeks have no ability to defend ourselves, and would rather drink a gallon of Ramune while fantasizing about getting laid for the first time than engage in witty repartee with suave chick magnets like yourself.

Your sarcasm is actually pretty pathetic, but uh I'll leave you alone to your hardcore yaoi and pockey.

Cool.. some competition for 2nd place. Maybe I'll be the one eating all of their food.. with the $2 profit I'm going to make since so many people are going (assuming I get 2nd). 3rd place = $.50.
Flaming Brandon for going to a competition to win money doesn't really make any sense. As he said, he doesn't play anymore, neither do I. Haven't played in 6 months or so, the only reason I'm going is for money. Doesn't mean I don't have a method of making any, it's just a little extra (to spend on food, like Billy said).
If you're better than someone at DDR it means they're a noob, but if you're worse than them they have no life? Stfu. Nice 600+ forum posts on a small arcade forum. Brings out how much more of a life you have compared to Brandon.

STFU, seriously people, dragging out this arguement is moronic. Go cry about it on a live journal, not on here. Dont make an account here to come on and flame someone, regardless of wether it is at the beginning or end of your post. People need to grow up.

OH SHIT I HAVE OVER SIX HUNDRED POSTS ON A SITE I'VE BEEN A PART OF FOR TWO YEARS, SOMEBODY CALL THE LOSER POLICE! I don't flame people for going to a tournament. I wanted as high an attendance rate as possible, as I care about the welfare of the store, and the people running the tourney. I was flaming him for being a smug, self-satisfied pretty boy, and a giant dripping vagina, but that's off the point. You don't know me, and I don't know you, so if you'd like to keep it that way then kindly f**k off and keep your nose out of my business.
P.S. I did my best to keep the obscenity to a bare minimum, sorry Anthony, G-man, Ishbo, Andy etc etc.
