Okay everybody! We have a date and we have details! On June 12, TGA will be sponsoring its first Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament! The following thread will be used for registration, details on rules as well as any final questions coming into the final days before the tournament.

Logistics
From the looks of it, the whole store will be dedicated to this tournament. What we do need are controllers, GameCubes, and televisions. If you can supply any of these items, please get in contact with myself or Andy through PM as soon as possible. The entry fee will be $10 for which includes the tournament entry fee plus the usual TGA flat rate. It will be $5 to enter just the tournament, but you must pay-per-play if you want to use any of the other machines.

There is no word on a grand prize as of yet, as soon as we get word from Andy, we will update this thread.

To enter, please post your name and your handle, an example follows:
Bryan Veloso - Syn
You may spread word of this tournament to other forums and to your friends, but PLEASE keep the registrations to this thread as it will be the master list. If there are competitors that wish to enter but are not a member of the forums, they do not have to sign up, but please PM me the names and handles so I can update this thread.

(Big thanks go out to Dipstick and Jamil for their help.) :mouse:

The Rules
The entire tournament is one on one, double elimination. A match is best two out of three games. A single game is to three lives (or six minutes). If a game goes to time, the winner is first determined by the number of lives remaining. If they are equal, then the person who has a lower damage percentage at the end wins (and sudden death is not played). If the damage percentages are equal, then sudden death is used to determine the winner.

All items are to be disabled.

As for stage selection, the following stages shall be available to be randomly chosen: Final Destination, Battlefield, Fountain of Dreams, Kirby 64, Yoshi's Story and Pokemon Stadium. There is also a secondary set of stages that can be picked, but will not come up randomly: Kongo Jungle 64, Corneria, Poke Floats, Rainbow Cruise, and Mute City.

For the first game of a match, characters are freely chosen and the stage is selected randomly. For all games after that, the loser of the previous game can opt to change their character and stage (from the aforementioned lists). However, the same stage can NOT be played twice in any given match. For the finals, "Final Destination" shall be used as the stage.

Again, people can bring their own controllers, but non-stock controllers may or may not be allowed (controllers can not have any auto-fire, slow-motion, or programmable features). No wireless controllers either (interference, another point of failure with the batteries, and a slight security hazard).

The staff and coordinators reserve the right to make any changes to the rules without any prior notice, including the day of the tournament, depending on situations that present themselves.

Can I enter my own tournament? :D

I am confused with the way registration is set up.

The entry fee will be $10 for which includes the tournament entry fee plus the usual TGA flat rate. It will be $5 to enter just the tournament.

(from the thread in headlines) (http://www.tokyogameaction.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1819&postcount=3)
The reason I have the $10 entry fee is in addition to covering costs and prizes, every time I have an event and don't charge an entry fee, there are always people that sneak in free games, kinda sad huh? I just don't have the time to babysit each machine. Last time I let a lot of free games slide, but this time it's not going to happen.

So I figure an event that's 13 hours long with a tournament, $15 is pretty fair. I want to give out as many prizes as I can too. And make the grand prizes as nice as possible.
What is what? What I want to know is what people need to pay out and what people can pay out as part of an in-store special (ie: if the flat-rate rate is down from twenty to ten dollars).

For the final matches, "Final Destination" shall be used as the stage.
What are the final matches? The final game in each match? Or for the finals of a paticular bracket? I am confused (and this strikes me as a little inconsistent -- why suddenly force the stage on people?)

What about items? (Unless I skipped over the part about it) Are you using ALL of them?

Heh, well, the piece that you quoted from Andy in his headline was posted before he changed his mind about putting both tournaments together - I created this thread right after he sent me a PM saying that he was splitting the two tournaments. So my quote is correct, we needed that $5 in there because I know there are going to be people there JUST for the SSBM tournament. But those people will also have to pay-per-play for anything else in the store.

Well, Jam gave that idea, and personally, I thought it was pretty good, not to have throughout the whole tournament, but for the finals. I apologize for not explaining myself more clearly. I mean, if enough people don't like this idea, then sure we'll change it. To me it's a very fair grounds of play, no place to escape, so the battles are more straightforward and even.

well, this changes my mind completely. @_@; i guess it does make it more fair...but i love it best when it's 4 players! there are so many things you can do...like have two players team up against one opponent and play volleyball with him XD

i'm assuming the damage will be set at 100% (or is 50% the default? i forget. it's been so long.)

either way, i guess i'm out. ^^;

Make it the 13th please please please

Not only because I had wanted to run a tournament myself, but because I work EVERY SATURDAY, can't get it off no matter what. I even talked to Andy and he said it would be worked out on a sunday or everything.

So why can't we do it the 13th? Also if we push it a few more weeks, I can get us a case of bawls for the tourney, just has to be a month after the GT tournament.

What we could do, Since we didnt wanna distract the SSBM tourny with the DMX tourny, Why not hold the DMX tourny on saturday and then the SSBM on the 13th?

Let's look at it this way. Billy has said no, nobody has complained before he has. So unless we get an overwhelming acceptance of Blaise's idea and can pretty much work their ass off on it, then we'll take steps towards changing this. Otherwise, I don't know what else to say but tough luck. :/

I'd normally say that's all well and good, but wasn't Billy one of the people who first pioneered the idea of this event? (I could be wrong about that)

Chris is correct, so... saying that we should wait for Billy? Dipstick did email me with rules and such when I asked for them. For some reason Dip was saying that he was also talking to Andy about this.

Okay, so pretty much it seems like I made an error, so let's rectify this. What do you guys want to do? I will ask Billy and see what he says, but I will not ignore the effort that Dip put into this.
