Cataclysm Part 2 - March 4, 2006

David Prouty High School
302 Main Street
Spencer, Ma 01562

-Alright, so, last time went well I suppose. We finished everything in a total of roughly 5 hours or so, got tons of time for friendlies and MM’s at the end and the beginning and no one got disqualified. Not bad. But this time is going to be better. And come on, Wife said it was “one of the best run tournaments” he’s been to. He gets around people it must’ve been good.

-We are planning to have an excellent turnout once again. Last time we had 41 people enter singles, and the singles tournament finished in about 3 hours. We had 17 teams and that got that finished in about 2 hours. This time however we would like to have more than that. Face the facts, the last tournament could not have run any smoother. So why not show up? Hugs is coming from California, Team Ben will be there. Unknown and the Turtles will be there, and a TON of locals will be there including The Mages! Now, what reason do you have for not being there? None, so step it up!!

-The Tournament will take place in Spencer MA, which is just outside of Worcester. It’s not too hard to get there. If you need help, Google maps will get you there no problem. If that still doesn’t work, IM one of us, Omegablackmage or Omegawhitemage. There will be a cell phone number posted the day before the tournament and it will be the only way to reach us on tournament day, so make sure if you might need it you have it.

There is still going to be a mandatory fee of $5 for anyone who enters the building. This is to cover major costs. If you have a problem with it, sorry but there can and will be no exceptions.

**General Rules**

The Mages DQ Rule is applicable when a player is late for a match and it goes as follows:
2 Minutes Late – Warning
4 Minutes Late – Loss of first match of set
6 Minutes Late – Loss of set

**Tournament Rules**

Crew Tournament: Details to come later....For crews we have a choice between Kish style crews(which we need at least 5 crews to run) or our own crew style which I will explain now. The first and second palce finishers in the singles tournament will both be selected at captains. There will then be a gym class style draft in which the first place finisher gets the first selection. Each captain will draft 10 players to his team. No team may have more than half of the players of any one crew on their team. This is to try and keep them even. ***We need opinions to make our decision. Please comment asap so we can get all the info up right away***

**Other Rules**

- Controller mods of ANY kind (short-hop mod, L-trigger mod, etc), except for cosmetic changes (paint job, different colored plastic), are banned. If you are caught using a banned controller you will be disqualified from the tournament.

- Turbo or programmed buttons of any kind are banned. You may use third party controllers or pads that have these features, but if you are suspected of using the banned features you will not be allowed to use that controller any longer.

-Glitches used to stop your opponent from controlling their character or indefinitely freezing them (Mewtwo's Soul Stunner, the Ice Climber freeze glitch), or any glitch or trick that freezes the match or makes it in any way unfinishable are banned. Using them will result in the immediate forfeit of the set.

- Tactics such as Peach's Wallbombing and Jiggly's Rising Pound are allowed as methods of recovery or to maneuver around the stage. Using them (or any similar tactics) to excessively stall a match, such as dropping below levels intentionally and stalling underneath, is banned. Judges will be on the tournament floor and can be called in at any time to enforce this rule during a match.

-Restart Rule - When a match starts and a player does not want to play the randomly selected stage he/she has 5 seconds to pause and quit the match so long as no lives were lost and no damage was given. Each player gets 1 per set (only applies to the first match of a set)

-Advanced Slob Picks - After the first match the loser says the stage out loud. Then the winner picks their character and the loser picks their character after that.

-Dave's Stupid Rule - Any stage that has already been played cannot be chosen again, even if its the stage you wish to use for your counterpick. We will make exceptions for the finals matches as those sets are best of 5.

-Housing is a definite option for those who will be coming from far away. Let one of us know though PM or IM if you need it.

-Any disturbance considered to be major will result in the eviction of the person or person(s) involved, no refund will be given and they will NOT be allowed at any future event. NO EXCEPTIONS!

if you play smash you should go to this

No tier-specific stuff? Like a low-tier tourny and etc? I've heard about people doing stuff like that and, being a Ness player, wouldn't be offended if those were to occure. ;)

Not if they suck, if they suck they might want to go to a less intense tournament. Super smash requires next to no skill, therefore im sure they're tourney will do fine.

Smash requires next to no skill? I highly beg to differ. lol Maybe you haven't seen some of the pros play yet. It's one of the hardest fighting games to master.

Ghost

I have seen the top players. I'll be completely honest, It isn't all that impressive. What I saw was excessive dodging, and hanging off the ledge so other people can't grab it. Where the fuck is the skill? OMG I'LL USE FOX HE IS WICKED FAST. Then again, maybe I just fall prey to the mentality of a real fighter player. In short, SSBM isn't a fighting game, it's a party game that takes one week and a 24 pack of mountain dew to master.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. Melee is more about timing and move placement then it is about memorizing button combinations and long drawn out combos. And I don't see how dodging isn't a skill in a fighting game.

As far as being mastered in a week, I've yet to be beaten by someone who's done so. And I'm not even a top player. But I suppose lack of skill could also lead to that mentality. To each his own.

What I saw was excessive dodging, and hanging off the ledge so other people can't grab it.
With the whole excessive dodging thing, it is a fighting type of game, to not try and dodge is literally stupid. But then again It's like that with any type of game where stuff is thrown at you and what not. If you're shot will you just take the hit like an idiot or try to do something about it, what if a sword is swung at you, a punch, a kick? I suppose dodging could be countered with blocking but in Smash the blocking is limited as well. Dodging allows you to manuever around and quickly counter back. Then there's hanging off ledges, in this game you can do that to save yourself, but that's just it, it can save you and if you don't want that person to come back you'll make sure that they don't. Like most games, the underlying objective is to ultimately win and have fun. In competitions though It's for the win.
OMG I'LL USE FOX HE IS WICKED FAST
That's another thing. Most players today only use top tier characters. It's understandable if the particular character is your favorite and what not, but most people who do play and are at the top are using the top tier because they're top tier. All that's proving is you're using a character who can and is obviously above the rest. It's not to say that there's no skill involved, don't get me wrong, but if you can be that good with one character you can with the rest. Some characters are just easier to learn.
In short, SSBM isn't a fighting game, it's a party game that takes one week and a 24 pack of mountain dew to master.
Wow, mastered in a week? I don't think so buddy, no one and I mean no one has the superhuman capacity to do that. I would ask you to try that and see if you could climb to the top in a week. Overcoming the difficulty of a game and defeating an actual human opponent are two different things. From my experience, I've been playing Smash since it came out and I can say that I'm no where near "god," nor have I seen anyone able to pull off what you've stated, in the time frame stated. However this game isn't for everyone, there will be different takes on stuff like this and that's fine.

Just here to throw my useless pennies in the bucket...

Dodging: Lots of games have their overused strategies and moves. Look at Soul Calibur II and the 2G technique some people mastered, and the excessive blocking that takes place. Look at Tekken where scrub matches are won by side-stepping and countering; I don't know if that strategy can take out a GOOD player, but it works in your average arcade alongside the normal people. I've watched Edo, who is pretty good at RF2 using a number of combos frequently with Mito. SSBM is allowed to have its abused mechanic without being degraded; I think most people harp on this game because it's what everyone else does.

Fox: Fox is a good character, and yes, he is top-tier. I don't know how much you've actually played with Fox, but he's rather difficult to use in my opinion. I think he's too fast. Also, he falls like a brick. I guarantee you that I could spank you with Fox with my Ness. Top-tier versus low-tier, and I'll still show you up because I know what I'm doing and I'm good with my character. Fox or Marth are not the win-all end-all solution SSBM. I have a friend who I play against frequently and is pretty good; he uses Marth, but I can kick his arse every time because I'm good with Ness.

One Week Mastery: No! I'd like to see you master WD'ing, L-canceling, short-hopping, and all the other tricks in the book. I've been playing for a while and I still goof up my techniques.

Here here to that, Gar. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. And I'm so very impressed at the knowledge you've gained in this game compared to back in the day.

Although....(pulls out white glove) ...I'd like to see your Ness "spank" my Fox. Or Mario for that matter. (*slap*) :p

Can't wait to verse again someday. :D

I'll spank your Fox. Are you still in Mass? We could hang out some coming weekend to practice for the tourny.

I'll play any of you guys in Smash any day of the week. I'm not saying I'll win, but I assure you I'll do respectably, and I haven't played seriously since the game came out. Hopefully I can prove once and for all that Smash is a great party game...but a terrible fighting game.

Jam

Ah, Gar! Unfortunately, I'm back in Florida for the time being. But I hope to be able to show up for July's festival. That is, unless you find a way to visit me in Palm Bay within the next 6 months. If not, then consider this your lucky training time until I come up and smack you around a bit. ;)

As for Ghost, I'm not sure how facing us and losing will prove that Smash is a bad fighting game. I wanna clarify that I'm not trying to be stubbornly argumentative, I just don't think that a game has to have life bars, super combos, and an anime-ish storyline to be a good fighting game. Smash is a game that breaks beyond the typical fighter mechanics. Simple controls, yet extensive use of attack timing. The skill is there. And I do look foward to having some matches with you in the future. :D
