I have always wondered why people get weak knees before "stepping up to bat". I see nothing to be scared of.

It's really an issue of self confidence. They look at the game, and think to themselves, "Wow, I will MORE than likely look like a COMPLETE ass doing that, cause I have NO idea how to do it right." Or that if they do look like a moron, their friends will think less of them etc. It's a self image deal. Most of the time, some people just don't like failure. And it is an intimidating game when you watch good players take a crack at it, anyone who can pass, say CSFIL(SM) can easily make a new player balk at even stepping up to the arrows.
Not everyone has these problems, I enjoy stepping yup to try things I haven't tried before. ESPECIALLY physical activities. I'm a very physical pesron, I love to dance, jump around, run, bike, DDR, DMm I'll give it a shot once. But not everyone is like me, cause I dont' care if I look like a moron doing something, in fact, that's my intent alot of the time =D
Hope that point of view helps. not sayign I can cover every mental insecurity angle. Just saying that's a big one =D
Have a ncie one folks, and don't run logn distances till you throw up after not eating for a long time (say... almost 24 hours...) it's not good for your body. =D

Amen to that. :crybaby:
Anyway...some people are just self-conscious about stuff. Although I'm not really sure why you would be that much more nervous in a tourney setting as opposed to casual play. People watch you in both cases...I guess KNOWING that everyone's watching you can throw some people off. Oh well. We all look just as dumb as everyone else when we play. It's still fun.

all the points above are quite true to the facts... but there are quite a few more reasons that people are afraid to play DDR.
the main of which is the fact that if they get seen doing "that faggin' dancing game" they might be considered a homosexual (not that i'm busting on them what-so-ever). Most people that are "too cool" to dance it up in the arcades are actually just too wimpy to admit they want to try it.
its as simple as that

I get terrified to play in front of people a lot. Especially when all the people I know are so much better than I am. But my confidence sucks anyways.

Well, in the recent Leominster tourney I had to go up against Allen and I was pretty nervous because he was a legend to me in my "DDR Youth." I was also nervous to up against Blaise for the same reason. AND I LOST TO BOTH OF THEM ON MY OWN SONG!! I lost to Allen by ONE POINT on Saints Go Marching and I lost by TWO POINTS to Blaise on Cartoon Heroes. Absolutely nuts!!! ARG!! Still upset over that.

Yeah I guess I will have to play more so I can get better, and compete more. I thank Eric for getting me in!
You are "the man" Eric.

Personally, I don't care what people think when I play DDR, it's just so much fun I couldn't care less. It's just when they talk while I play.... that ticks me off >.<*

when i play, i just tend to zone-out and listen to the music (if i like it) and sometimes i end up missing steps :guin: but if i'm playing in a tourney for PA, then i don't listen to the music as much and focus on the steps.
