View Full Version : Old School Arcade Games?
Every arcade is guarenteed to have at least one. Sometimes they are lurking in the back, they're plywood cases and peeling graphics appealing to a smaller population then the new fangled Fighters and music games. Pac Man cries for his fallen comrades. What game do you feel should be in every arcade, from the "old school" genre?

I'm gona have to say Pacman, every arcade needs to know the old school glory of a cheese wedge that eats marbles for a living, but is afraid of ghosts until it eats a big marble, which then gives him the power to eat ghosts.
All in all, I think Pacman is the story of our lives....
I salute you pacman!

From what I've seen, galaga is everywhere you want to be. But if I had my choice, I'd go for some mario bros. and tetris.
i've never played mario in an arcade before. I kinda wish i could.

yeah back in the day, the original was everywhere. I didn't get good at it until years later. And now it's hard to find, well, unless you emu it.

I remember when I saw Street Fighter I in my old hometown's arcade, it was weird, because by then, Street Fighter II was already mainstream. There are so many others though, it just escapes me as to what they are.

Lets see, there's contra, ghost busters, joust, raiden, 1942, gauntlet, alien syndrom, rygar, asteroids, pong, hang-on, outrun, after burner, tube'n, smash tv, golden axe, hmm, shinobi, gladiator, I guess it matters what time period we're talking?

i really enjoyed playing dungeons and dragons (that 2d side scroller game that had multiple screens for up to like 4 players). Every time i go to Old Olchard Beach in ME i spend all my money on that game, it's soo much fun.

Wow, somebody actually remembers that game. I was addicted to that when I went to the Philippines in the early 1990s, it was awesome on the big screen TV and so much fun to play with anybody. :]
Cristian - definitely some karma for bringing that game up. :D

I seem to see Pac Man everywhere. Even our local burrito joint has one. The best thing about old school video games in my opinion is that they still only cost a quarter! I haven't been around any in a while (other than what's at the movie theater) but I know the prices were getting insane!

OMG, I totally forgot about Pitfall. That was a cool game. I liked Tron too. And just about any boxing game, but I don't remember what they were even called.

I think there should be a Final Fight machine in every arcade. Everyone can use a little street fightin' violence.
I'm starting to love those really crappy shooting games in which they used actual people as targets. Like Area 51's early releases, or Maximum Force. Not too old school, but no better way to relieve stress then to actually shoot people

Are you sure you don't mean Super Mario World? That was the only Mario game (save for Donkey Kong) that I can recall being an arcade game. It gave you a time limit and I think it came with F-Zero.
I pretty much grew up in an arcade (seriosuly) and that's all I ever recall seeing...plus I'm old. I could be wrong though *shrugs*

Pac-Man and Galaga!
Old school video games can teach you a lot about life. For example, Pac-Man teaches you to run around in the dark munching on strange pills that you find on the floor ^_^

I really liked a lot of the Capcom CPS2 games, (Willow, Captain Commando, Alien Vs. Predator, Rockman The Power Battles, Saturday Night Slam Masters, etc.) It's not really an arcade game, but I really liked that game where you sat down and had to shoot clowns with like a cannon...FWOOSH!!! And I also enjoyed Metal Slug, the original Star Wars arcade with that funky controller, The Simpsons, Sunset Riders, Time Crisis 3, Virtua Cop 3, Ninja Gaiden, X-MEN, and a whoooole lot more. And the original Mario Bros. game was also included in the NES release of Super Mario Bros. 3. =D

Yeah, I remember the Super Mario Twins arcade game. I remember spending like $5 playing it. I was in Colorado. :guin: It was the exact same thing as the NES version, except with an arcade-like joystick :bunny: as opposed to a controller. Yes, folks: that was before I went to the arcade to play Mortal Kombat :gator: , which was before I went to the arcade to play "FRANCE! FRANCE REVOLUTION!"... i mean, "DANCE! DANCE! REVOLUTION!" :mouse:

Hi all- for anyone who dislikes gamezone I ask that you read no more
(dr. J?) this way no negitive comments will be made- anyway I want to be up front with everyone and admit that I do help out at gamezone on a part time basis. That said I do also come in to TGA- not so much for the games as I haven't ever recieved an open welcome from anyone but I do love Pocky- So for that I do venture across the street often- anyway I noticed this thread and for anyone who missses the oldschool games, like asteroids, pacman, galaxian, bubbles, robotron, joust, tempest, arkanoid, street fighter, marvel vs capcom,oh and don't forget about berzerk and wizard of wor! etc, I just want you to know that GZ has their new Timemachine up and running. Its an ultracade cab that plays hundreds of classics-even mario brothers! Anyway stop over sometime if you want to check it out. I noticed maniacMike started a timemachine thread and never answered someone to what it was, so I'll post this there also!

Galaga is an awesome old school arcade game. My sister has the actual machine in her basement and for one period of time I must of played it like for 6 or 8 hours in a row because I was drawn to it, but then the t.v. tube in it blew and we had to by a new one for $200.

Okay, since this is my specialty, I'll try to limit it only to the real ones every arcade player should have access to:
Star Wars. This game is not only a color vector game, but had the greatest arcade controller ever and plays exactly how one would imagine flying an X Wing to be. If one is lucky enough to have ever played the cockpit with a 25" monitor, this is arcade perfection.
Galaga. Still incredible 20 years later.
Ms. Pac Man... same as Galaga...
Centipede... best use of the trackball and furious gameplay without a stick.
Tempest... best spinner game EVER, moves faster than one would think a game could.
Don't look past pinballs and the 60s era pitch and bat baseball games, either. Great, great stuff you simply cannot emulate.
