Well, the long anticiptated next installment of the Quake series has come and left die hard fans with.......a bittersweet feeling of the game.
The story of Quake 4 picks up where 2 left off. Your the badass rookie of the overlydone kick ass squad of soliders known as Rhino Squad. Then you jump from your ship onto the surface of the Strogg planet and put a bunch of holes in stroggs with a group of marines who tend to like war a lot more than any human should. You do all the things a typical FPS hero would do. Blowing up gun turrets, hangers, buildings, all by yourself. Taking on masses of enemy troops on your own. All the typical crap. Nothing too original or exciting. Well, one origional event happens, you get captured and watch yourself get mutulated and turned into a strog. Its....not pretty. Though you get...some benefits, if you can call it that. You get an extra 25 health and armor and...nothing else.
Graphiclly, the game is sound. Its runs off of the Doom 3 engine so it looks nice. At the moment, its one of the best looking games on the market. The designers did a good job of making an errie machine driven planet, though it still have those overused technology themes. Random moving objects and glowing large spheres means this room is important kind of thing.
The gameplay is painfully simple. Its the typical Quake way of going about things. "If it moves, shoot it. If it still moves, get another gun." Boss fights are easy and simple. The last boss requires little skill at all. I count it, 5 shots to win that fight, neither of which required any form of precision.
I didint have a chance to test out multiplayer, but with HL2's options, why would i want to go anywhere else?
All in all, Quake 4 isnt a bad game, it jsut....doesnt stand out. It looks nice, yea, but grapics dont make the game anymore.
