Hey. I am currently translating Volume 16 of BLEACH (?????? There are 2 books i use to look up kanji and words in hira/katagana that i do not know. translating manga has made my memorization of hiragana complete, along with adding to my vocabulary and adding kanji to my memory.

(please see attachment for the books i use)

The book on the left is: "Kanji Pict-O-Graphix" by Michael Rowley
This clever book has over 1,000 kanji with the On and Go readings, and very witty mnemonics. (Hiragana and katakana are also mnemonic-ized too) :D
it can be purchased at Barnes & Noble (thats where i saw it) for around $20

The book in the middle is: "Japanese Step by Step" by Gene Nishi
Gene Nishi is the founder of the Nishi Institute of Language Education, so you know this author knows what they are doing. ;)
This book covers EVERYTHING and breaks it down into easy to digest sections. There are charts to show you how to conjugate the verbs etc. and the katakana chart is up to date with what has been developed in Japan.
This can be purchased at Boarders (thats where i bought it) for $16.95

The book on the right is the above mentioned manga "Bleach"

I find the first two books very useful in my pursuit of learning Japanese :D

I've been using Adventures in Japanese for the last couple years, but that's because I get it free from my school. Nontheless, I think the grammer teachings PWN the other books, and it's good for speaking. Vocabulary and kanji lack a bit.

Here's a useful page for learning hiragana, showing the stroke order of each:

http://www.sf.airnet.ne.jp/~ts/japanese/hiragana_stroke.html

A better demonstration than any book can give, if you ask me. :)

(There are also applets for katakana, and some other things that might be helpful later on.)

i have several books for japanese grammar, etc.
I stumbled upon two cute books for advanced/intermediates:
Handbook of Japanese Grammar
Handbook of Japanese Usage

They give great english/japanese examples

these will help out with the annoying particle combinations that are typically not covering in most schools 1-3rd year of teaching Japanese.

It is essential to have a Kanji book that at least covers the 1945 (or so) Kanji that are deemed "readable" by newspaper standards. These kanji reserve the right NOT to have furigana (the kana above them), depending on the age target of the literature you are reading.

Finally the most useful tool (PC wise) i have found is this: follow these instructions:
Go here

> click on "Just Get It!
> and download those four things you see.

> Then download the following :

> with those four .exe and then open the program. Dictionary is f6,
> radical lookup is f5.

> Hit f6 and then click Options -> Dictionaries - > Add

follow these steps:

1. Go to Control Panel.

2. Click on Regional Options.

3. On the General tab, under Language settings for the system, select the check box next to the language group(s) you want to install.

4. Click on "Apply" button. To complete the installation of language groups, you must insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or have access to the system files from the network. Once the languages are installed, Windows 2000 prompts you to restart the computer.

If you go to Regional Options in the Control Panel and click "Change keyboards or other input methods", you can add Japanese to your language bar which will allow you to also type in hiragana, katakana, AND kanji. This is in addition to Momo's tip though. Momo's advice will only get you the ability to read Japanese characters when they appear on your computer. That's only if you ever need to type in Japanese. lol But I thought it would be useful for you.
