I would say Old School, The first game I've ever played was the mario for Nintendo. ahh, the olden days. Though I've never beaten it yet, I think I still have the system and the game to play it. ^_^

...while i don't discourage appreciation for the classics... there is a fine line between appreciating the classics for the games that they are, and worshipping them because its the trendy thing to do. (directed at the people who are younger than 16, here)
sadly, i don't see any real appreciation.
I miss the old days, where developers spent more time actually creating a fun game rather than trying to impress everyone with "BEST GRAPHICS EVER GUYYS OMG."

Eh, I'm 14, and I've been playing video games since I was 4 or 5. I have an older sister who was into them too.

There's a difference between explaining it and going "CLASSICS ARE GREAT BECAUSE THEY'RE CLASSICS YAH!!!" =p

You want to know why i like classics? they're not the greatest graphics. We all know that. And anyone in this day and age who's like "it's classic so it's good" are going crazy over the NES.
I'll tell you why i love Super Mario World (which, IMHO, is one of the MAJOR contenders for the best game of all time).
I can't beat it. I'm not sure why. I was able to play when i was 3. I could make it to Bowser, with a little trouble.
I couldn't beat him. EVER.
And i've gotten damned close too.
i've played that game so much that i can still knock off all of the names of each "world". Yoshi's Island, Donut Plains, Vanilla Cave, The Bridges (butter and something else) Mysterious Forest, Choco Island, Ghost Ship, Bowser's land. Star Land, Special Zone? (oh yeah, Gnarly of Special ZOne. DO NOT ATTEMPT. It's just not possible)
To me, Classics represent a type of challenge. Due to being restricted by the graphics engine, they could only make 2d games, and they decided to make them as hard as they could.
I like Super Mario Bros. 3 because it was my favorite game they included on Super Mario All-Stars. And, God as my witness, World 3 was a (censored........................... censored more.................... sto- oh no, nvm..................). I hated world 3. I hate water levels. Even to this day, because world 3 just got me that angry. So i'd use a whistle and skip to my favorite world: 4. 4 was great. It was world 1 all over again, but pretty much bigger. And i had no problem with that.
Then i got an emulator off the web because i heard some of the SNES games were extremely rare and extremely good. So i look around, find a FF6 rom, and a Chrono Trigger ROM.
WOW.
And i thought that Ocarina of Time was Good (and it still is, in my opinion, Top 3 or 4 ever)
These two games were MASTERPIECES. Lord of their domain. And FFX? it couldn't hold a candle to either of those (though i did like Auron and the level up system, that's about it) Those two games would revolutionize games for as long as games exist (and you can still find traces of them, stealing a piece of plot here, a hook there, a character, etc.
I don't just think these games are cool. I have felt these games surround me and drown me in their depths, with the incredible Esper System (which everyone thinks of as A materia system, and i guess you could make a point they're the same) The OPTIOns of storyline from CT. The struggle of Good Over Evil in FF4. The Complexity of Tatics Ogre (do not play w/o an instruction manual.) The maze of Metroid (which i think is Zelda in the future, minus the magic part)
Great Games stole from each other. The Best Games would steal ideas from everyone, and make their own. Which is why I will buy anything created by Nintendo (Mario Kart [Yes i played the originals, and have yet to beat Special 150cc] Zelda, Metroid, and all of their other games) simply because they have a very high standard for quality, and though they may not reach it every time they create a game (Wind Waker was no Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time) they add something that will change the way you look at games forever. (The most fun I have ever had beating a boss is In 1) Link to the Past, the 3 headed Turtle, that was pure fun 2) Twinrova in OOT, which is essentially a remake of the previous boss and 3) Metal Ridley from Metroid Prime (That was some hard stuff)
Now i may just be a fanboy for ninty, but if you think i show no appreciation, i'd love to see what you consider to be as such.

But I didn't really say that. Unless you were assuming that, from my age.

Gnarly is far harder than neccisary, but not impossible. Most of the special stages are super-ass hard for no reason other than to keep you from beating it.
And FF6 is by far my favorite game ever. You're right, it's a total masterpiece. I go back through and play the whole thing every year at least once just to remind myself that videogames used to be good and innovative.

sorry, i tend to stereotype you youngin's so much because i've seen so much of the trendy 14 year old hot-topic shopper trying to be cool by liking old school games when their first game was something that can be considered new generation (yes, i know i have 99% of their gaming clothes)
Oh yeah, i love it when people take what i say seriously.

ah, just trying to prove a point. Don't worry about it.
However, i've yet to play FF7-9, the fanboy years. are they any good?
Other games i've yet to play to see the "godliness" of:
Metroid Prime 2 (My Gamecube broke sometime during the summer. not sure of the problem. ANy1 know a place where i can get it fixed)
Zelda 1&2
Metroid 1 and 2 (2's wicked rare, and i just can't beat 1. Not sure why.)
FF1-3 (Started 1 on an emulator, never beat it)
Viewtiful Joe 1&2
Star Wars KoToR
Half Life 1&2
Resident Evil
I've yet to beat DKC3 .1 and 2 i did, 2 the normal way, but was close to getting all bonus and DK coins. 3 is just ridiculously tough, especially the levels where you use more than one animal, or a remix of the Mine Cart levels, OMG i loved those...
Mario Lost levels i need to beat
Chrono Cross (though i've heard some debate over this being any good if you compare it to the original.)
GTA (all of them)
And just so everyone knows, i'm not a big fan of modern music. It just seems.... loud and angry. I listen to Funk, Classic Rock, and Jazz. And any random tunes i like (which are mostly DDR tunes, but some are odd, like I fought the Law's cover by Green Day, I predict A riot by Kaiser Chiefs, and Vertigo by U2. Not sure why.
So i wear some jeans (in myh figure, i'll guarantee you they're fairly lose) and khakis, and sweatshirts because i like feeling warm, but not hot.
another long pointless post . lol

the fanboy years of FF weren't very good. 7 was a big rip-off of 6 (but worse), 8's story didn't really go anywhere until about halfway through disc 3, and 9 was just uninteresting overall.
zelda 1 and 2 you must play. EoS. Same with FF1, it just requires some patience because that game is LONG (I've also never beaten it, because chaos is a bastard).
The Lost levels were ok, but there were some things that made me mad (like warp tunnels at force you to go BACK levels).
I'm also not a fan of popular music, although I do like my punk (it's anger with intent ;))

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned Super Mario 64 yet. It's not one of the "classics," but it is one of the best Mario games. If I'm not completely wrong with my facts (which I most definitely can be,) I've heard that 64 was the first game ever to offer a full 3d world to play in. And the gameplay was awesome. My little cousin and I spent hours and hours on end attempting to get every last one of the 120 stars, but only managed to get 119.
Super Mario World is defenitely awesome, as well. It was my favorite, and I could beat it, but I could never get it done 100%. The extra stages, Gnarly, Awesome, etc.. were always the ones that got me. Soooo hard.
So I have to say that I'm a huge fan of the 64 as opposed to the NES or SNES. They were both fun but my NES was so crappy that I could only play a game half of the time I tried to play, and I didn't have many good SNES games... only games like SUper Mario World and Starfox and Shaq Fu. But I could never beat Starfox... (I pwned Starfox 64, though. Haha.)
Well, I'm more of a new school kind of girl anyway, so I have to say the newer Nintendo 64 is my favorite system. It was revolutionary.

The only N64 game I was undyingly attached to was 1080*. When I had my SNES, I used to play Global Guts, Mario, Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, etc. We had tons of games, it was awesome.

Mario Kart 64 was so much better than the original. The original was cool though, and 64 did butcher Rainbow Road, but it was even more great the second time around.

I guess, but I was pretty amazing at the original version. I liked some of the courses more, although the 64 graphics were obviously better.
