I just recently beet this game and it was one of the best RPGs I have ever played. Its so much fun and the plot is oringinal. Its not a Final Fantasy clone at all. Has anyone else played TOS?

Erm...play Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Best RPG duo, ever. Yes, sure, I liked ToS, and did think it the best thing ever.....until I played Shadow Hearts.

And it was cliche at points....it wasn't completely original.

Shadow Hearts sounded interesting...But I had not money to buy it.....But TOS was more oringinal than most of the RPGs out there. There were slight similarities to other RPGs.

I love this game. Tales was probably the best RPG since Ocarina of Time. I especially loved the fighting, real time fighting is the best type, having turn based or anything like that kind of degrades the battling excitement. Also your right, the plot was awsome, even better then Ocarina's. The final boss was a little too easy though, the bone dancers were a lot harder.

PLAY THIS GAME!!!!!

You don't think so? I would say that almost every game is, in theory, an RPG. Everything but pong and fighting games, things like that. Tetris...

But in Ocarina of Time you play the role of Link trying to save Zelda. Sooo... eh? Correct me if I'm wrong...

There is more to Role-Playing Games than playing the role of someone, just like being able to speak random words in japanese is not the same as speaking Japanese OoT was not an RPG per-se, but had elements of RPGs within it.

One of my favorite RPG's of all time wasn't, technically, an RPG. Deus Ex: Invisible War ^_^. FPS + RPG (if done Right) = awesome

Allright, you've made your claim, now tell me what exactly makes a game a Role-Playing Game. I would assume that it simply involves role-playing, or playing the role of a character, which is the entire idea behind a game like OoT.

But I may be confused, somehow, so do me a favor and define to me exactly what a "Role-Playing Game" requires to be an RPG other than being a game where you play the role of a character.

Yay, more Zelda RPG debate goodness.

My personal rules are simple:

If killing enemies doesn't promote to character growth, it's not an RPG. In Zelda (with the exception of Zelda II), you can kill as many enemies you want, but Link will stay the same. Sure, you can get rupees, which in turn grant you different weapons or types of armor, but there are so few of these that it's far from enough to consider it an RPG.

The enemies are simply obstacles, not aids in growth. And this pretty much defines just about all Zelda games as Action/Adventure games.

Edit:

Oh, and to say a few things about ToS: It never really interested me. I've hated the Tales series ever since they changed the art style, starting with Tales of Eternia (known as the horribly-named Tales of Destiny II in the US). Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny, and any other of the Tales incarnations that share the style with these two are some of my favorite RPGs.

I had no idea they had others and the cell shaded characters and the anime cut-scenes in TOS are gorgeous.

And this is necessary how? Does it matter?

Well, thank you. That may be a pretty good definition and explanation of why certain games are not RPGs, but you cannot deny that "RPG" is quite a simplified title for what is, clearly, a very specific genre. If RPGs were true to what their title implies, than OoT, you must admit, would be one.

I don't completely agree with the article, but hey, it is the best thing I have ever seen anyone offer up to define what a "true" RPG is.
