I know that TGA is mostly for gaming and stuff, But what if we can have a public screening of an anime (AKIRA, anyone?), or have an AMV contest. ? I could provide the DVDs.
I'm just curious.

Bryan
May 11th, 2004, 09:28
I don't see a problem with that.
Anybody else?

Darius
May 11th, 2004, 09:59
Hey, Anime Screenings sounds fun =) ALthough, large group of gamers... I feel bad for anyone who actualy WANTS to watch the movie in earnest

/me chuckles.

But yea, sounds like a plan...

If possible, when can one be arranged?

If possible, when can one be arranged?
You would have to talk to Andy about this.
Throw him a PM and I'm sure he'll get to you when he visits again.

i've got a problem with it! it was our idea to do that regularly once we opened our anime eclipse store.... ;D but since now it's only gonna be an online-based store...i say HURRAH!

and i've got some anime movies of my own to contribute...

-cowboy bebop the movie
-grave of the fireflies
-end of evangelion
-kenshin ova (aka samurai x)
-revolutionary girl utena the movie (aka adolescence of utena)

the best of these to watch, i think, would be the kenshin ova. you don't need to have watched the series to get this...in fact, the ova is infinitely better (and cooler) than the series. :p

grave of the fireflies is probably too slow and depressing for the general audience at tga...end of evangelion would only make sense to people who've seen the series...revolutionary girl utena is damn wierd, so it's only for people who like that sorta stuff....i guess cowboy bebop would work, too...it's not necessary to have seen the whole series, but it definitely adds a lot to it. :]

Ghost
May 12th, 2004, 11:33
kenshin ova all the way, oh by the way akira is horrible, hah, so yeah.

Devil Warrior
May 12th, 2004, 11:37
No first time anime viewer should EVER see Akira, it WILL turn them off. Ghost In The Shell maybe, or Kenshin. Or maybe Cowboy Bebop since its cool.

May 12th, 2004, 11:48
the first anime series i ever watched besides Cowboy bebop on cartoon network was Evangelion and i thought it was stupid and confusing at first but I really got into it and loved it by the end.

Full Metal Panic is really good too though i never saw past mission 2 DVD and sold it to adam cause i ddint have enough money to buy the rest of the series.

Though I haven't realy seen much else..I'v seen Akira and I didn't even think it was THAT bad though I think I fell asleep, hah. It wasn't too amazing though. But yeah. This whole idea sounds cool,yo.

Devil Warrior
May 12th, 2004, 11:51
Amanda, go away. You watched Full Metal Panic dubbed. Thats just... wrong, especially since the dub sucks so much.

iceymoon
May 12th, 2004, 12:05
yeah, that's the only request i have...no dubs please! ;_; it's bad enough that our only suppliers of anime on tv give us nothing but dubs...(some aren't that bad, but most are HORRIBLE), but we can do something about it!! all my dvd's are subtitled, so yeah.

i really liked akira...buuuut, i agree it's not a good initiation to non-anime viewers. it's confusing and graphic, and freaky at parts. @@;

so does everyone agree on the kenshin ova? i'll bring it...if i'm not working....

Darius
May 12th, 2004, 12:28
No first time anime viewer should EVER see Akira, it WILL turn them off. Ghost In The Shell maybe, or Kenshin. Or maybe Cowboy Bebop since its cool.

Well, I have to disagree.

First anime I ever saw...

Survey says...

AKIRA!

And look at me now?

I love anime, watched a whole crap load of it, and honestly, I don't see what everyones negatiev opinion of Akira comes from.

Also... Dubbing, while I agree, can sometimes be completely horrendous, isn't THAT bad. I've also seen some REALLY bad subbing. So it DOES go both ways. I've always wondered why people are so high up and fancy to do about dubbing. Maybe it's just because I'm an aesthetic guy who likes to focus on the visuals. As long as they get the point across, I rarely care what they sound like in English.... although it does happen when even I cringe.

Just my thoughts...

Other good Animes to watch are X (NOT THE MOVIE OH DEAR GOD PLEASE NOT THE MOVIE!)
Hellsing, Read or Die(this one is good cause it's fairly short) and I Know I'm missing something i wanted to sudgest, but oh well =)

Anyhoo. There's my $.54

Have a good one folks.

Devil Warrior
May 12th, 2004, 12:31
Well, some dubs suck, some don't. I like some dubs, IE Cowboy Bebop, .Hack//Sign, Trigun. But some dubs suck, IE Full Metal Panic.

Darius
May 12th, 2004, 12:37
Fair enough. Just alot of the times I Hear people curses ALL dubs and thats the end of their story. That was more what I'm questioning.

But thanks for clarifying =)

Devil Warrior
May 12th, 2004, 12:40
Funny enough, I forgot to mention the dub I hate most, that BEING Akira...

Most dubs I don't mind, its just that some are really bad. Just like some original voice acting can be kind of odd. Milly(I think)'s from Trigun REALLY bugs me, which is why I like the dub better.

Currently I'm looking forward to this summer:

.Hack//Legend of Twilight's Braclet
Wolf's Rain
Hajime No Ippo

Hajime no Ippo I'm REALLY looking forward to, as thats easily my favorite anime. I wonder if it'll be a good dub... same with Wolf's Rain, thats being done by the same studio as Cowboy Bebop.

i am a sub-lover because japanese casters don't choose voice actors with exaggerated dubbing skills...or at least not as exaggerated as american voice actors tend to be. xo; the american way is that if there's an old man on screen, they get a guy to do a really comical-sounding low and raspy quivering voice. it gets annoying. @@;

i do think that the dubbing in cowboy bebop is a HUGE improvement from the typical dubs that used to be around...but still, the voice acting of jet regularly annoys me since, even when he's talking seriously, his voice tends to go up and down...and although variance in voice pitch is natural, the way he does it just isn't. it's distracting. the other's are okay...but when it comes to one-episode characters or even the two hosts of the bounty show, most of those characters are pretty typical of american dubbing. x_x; a good example of this would be the petstore-owner lady in the 2nd episode, stray dog strut...man, she was HORRIBLE. i couldn't stop thinking about it. i can see some people would rather endure that, though, than read subtitles. Oo;

basically, the japanese voices are better suited for their characters and therefore, less distracting and annoying. anime is a HUGE entertainment idustry in japan, so they have their own set of voice actors that are well-known and respected in the anime business. i mean, some anime voice actors have their own fanclubs!

also, there's the point of phrases that are lost in translation because of the fact that dubbers are limited since they have to synch their diologue with the mouth movement that's been made for japanese dialogue (talk about a run-on sentence)...but that's a whole other topic.

as for bad subs....yes, there exists plenty. but most american-released anime dvd's have been professionally subbed, therefore little to no errors in subtitles. actually, some take the dubbed script and just copy&paste into subtitles...which bothers me sometimes, but it's much better than nothing. :]

it's not a "high up and fancy" thing...we have our reasons, just like you have yours. it's a matter of preference, so i guess in the end we'll decide by the majority?

iceymoon
May 12th, 2004, 13:10

omg, i agree completely. @_@; and it's hard for me because i like her character.

*cries* i wanna get my hands on wolf's rain so badly...it looks absolutely beautiful. but i'd rather watch the subbed version first, and also not on tv because there's a good chance i won't be able to catch every episode. ._.;

I've got 26 episodes fan-subbed. I hear there are a couple more but never bothered to look into it.

Funny enough, I forgot to mention the dub I hate most, that BEING Akira...

Which one? The one with Cam Clark as Kaneda?

Anyway. I own the Subbed edition of AKIRA, and thats the one I grew up with. I think people might enoy it, but I also have:
Fist of the North Star: The Movie (Subbed) :gator:
FLCL: Episode 4 (Dubbed)
DBZ: The Tree of Might (Dubbed)
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (DVD)
Princess Mononoke (DVD... Wonderful)
Megaman Season 1 (English)
Metropolis (DVD)

If I pick up some Naruto episodes, that series is wonderful as well. I also plan on picking up Hellsing at some point. I own other stuff like the first volume of Vampire Hunter D, a couple volumes of Trigun, All episodes of Weiss Kruz on VHS, a couple VHS copies of Ranma 1/2 volumes (so old school XD), Metropolis, a volume of Cutey Honey VHS (ick, a little raunchy, wasn't a huge fan), a Maison Ikkoku volume VHS.... gwad I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Very nice. It's good to keep an open mind about anime. I have been watcching it since I was 2. In Puerto Rico they have it spanish dubbed and then in new york they had it too. Then I came to Mass and then I realized that all of my childhood, I have watching Hentai. Not my fault.

Ishbo
May 13th, 2004, 13:28
Well I wasn't either, but there was nothing else to watch. I mean I hated Sesame Street cuz they looked weird to me. Cuz in America Sesame Street is different than puerto rico. In my country Big Bird is green with red and yellow feathers on his head. Elmo is blue. Oscar is red. and Grover was brown.

Devil Warrior
May 13th, 2004, 13:31
Yes, anime IS better than Sesame Street. I mean, what life lessons does Sesame Street teach? Live in a garbage can. Eat cookies. Talk in the 3rd person... Anime is much better. Teaches you to be a ninja and a vampire and stuff.

Ishbo
May 13th, 2004, 13:37
You know it bro. So much better. I mean Anime makes you think more deep in thought. Because of the plots. And well there are so manythings to choose from. And Anime can be incorporated in life rather easily. Plus when I came here, I learn more english thanks to anime, cuz I used to watch it dubbed black in my day.

Devil Warrior
May 13th, 2004, 13:42
Back in December I used to watch so much anime. I literally caught up on Naruto, at the time was around ep60 or so, in a weekend. Wonder what happened to that... I need to watch Get Backers still. And other things.

Ishbo
May 13th, 2004, 13:46

Maybe the better idea would be to have like... a bi weekly (cause weekly is too often) Anime Night? Where we just set up a day and have a movie, or so many episodes of a series, prepared to play. And just start the showing at a certain time.

That way, we can just chill out, watch Anime, and have a rockin good time. ANd we have snacks on hand we can purchase, so it's not like we have to buy anything before hand.

Which might also help the snacks sales for Andy.

Just a thought.

But my personal vote for an Anime showing would be Hellsing. I've seen it all, but would NOT mind watching it all over again.

Devil Warrior
May 13th, 2004, 18:31

That's really the only obstacle we have is to actually get a date that works for everybody. But since this thread is getting way too long, I suggest making a new thread to decide the date.

thanks for your support on this idea. :D

Andy
May 14th, 2004, 09:01
This is a great idea and a great thread. Thank you very much guys!!! I was actually throwing this idea around for a while but it got put on the back burner due to other issues. Believe it or not, Rob Brown and I were talking about this today but I had to end the discussion when he suggested we watch Mortal Kombat 2 and follow it up with a discussion group where we cosplay and act out our favorite scenes at Scramblers.

The only concern I would have would be with the content of some anime. Although I believe in a support free speech (I risk my life every night to protect it) TGA is still a family and Christian owned establishment and I do have a duty to protect our younger patrons against anything their parents would object to them seeing.

So just something to keep in mind when we pick the movies. I know nothing about anime so I would need a detailed and full summary of any potential issues prior to showing it. Or I could appoint a person to run and promote the said Movie night every week. I'll leave this project up to you, pick a weekday you think will work (Wednesday is usually the slowest), nominate someone and have them get back to me.

Also one more thing I would like to suggest, this doesn't have to be limited to Anime. Anything wtih a Japanese theme would be cool, we could also show J pop concerts, Live action movies, Japanese Game shows.. etc.

If this really takes off we can buy a big screen TV so the movies look better.

This is a great way to promote and market the store to people who have never been to TGA.

I figured Wednesdays could be Anime night. I support and appreciate this project so much, I would be willing to have a special TGA member rate of $12 which would include the movie, the all day flat rate (open to close), and a discount on snacks.

Again thank you for taking the time to help the store out. The more fun we can have the better. Also, the more money we can raise the faster I can implement DM, IIDX upgrade and some other projects I am exploring.

Andy

iceymoon
May 14th, 2004, 13:28
in that case, princess mononoke is pretty wholesome and a great movie alltogether. kenshin the ova is violent...cowboy bebop would be a good candidate, i think. although...i'd like viewers to see the series before they see the movie.

i have the last dvd of cowboy bebop (the series)...anybody else have the first 5? ^^; also, i think the idea of once every other week is better than once every week...because not everyone has it in their scheduel to come down every week...and if we're screening a series, they'd miss out! but i'm not too sure...what sounds better to everyone else?

also..."late night battle royale" XD i love this idea, but maybe can we incorperate this maybe once every months, or ever other month? not just battle royale, but a general late night series...because there are some very good anime titles out there that maybe aren't good for openning up to the full public, especially the youngsters that are regulars. but maybe for those who are interested, they can stay late to watch other anime titles such as the kenshin ova, perfect blue (questionable), and battle royale...?

Very nice. It's good to keep an open mind about anime. I have been watcching it since I was 2. In Puerto Rico they have it spanish dubbed and then in new york they had it too. Then I came to Mass and then I realized that all of my childhood, I have watching Hentai. Not my fault.

haha, in mexico they've had plenty of anime series, too...because they're not concerned about cencoring. ^^; they didn't cover up the nude scenes in dbz like they did here in the US. they also had this series called caballeros del zodiaco (in japan the title is saint seiya) which is REALLY good, but really violent (they started airing it on cartoon network, but they messed it up completely ._.;). my favorite series as a kid was candy, candy, but at the time i didn't know what anime was...it was just a really good series to me. also about sesame street...in mexico we have that green big bird guy, too! his name was abernaldo...or something like that. i don't remember the rest of the characters as well, though.

Hmm.... I might be able to contribute, but most of my fav anime is HK bootlegs with somewhat poor subtitles. It's still decent though. I could bring One Piece (episodes 1-52, 91-120) which is easily my favorite anime next to Super Gals! (episodes 1-26) <- We should totally watch this! It's hilarious! I own way more manga personally. Let's do a manga screening day as well! ^o^

i'm thinking either shorter anime series, or anime movies would be best, since it might be hard for everyone to keep up with an ongoing series showing regularly. it's hard enough to keep up with series on tv because there's no guarantee you'll be home every night to watch it. @@; so the 26 ep. one sounds good. also, it's probably better if it's dvd since then we have a choice of sub or dub.

LOL i thought of manga screening, too...but i'm not sure how everyone would feel about sitting around reading. :p it's fine with me, but i'm a mangaholic. and i'm not sure i'd be willing to lend out my manga...ever since someone messed up the manga i lent them, i got protective. ¬.¬;

btw, does anyone have vampire hunter d: bloodlust? that might be another good one to show...and jin-roh...

Darius
May 14th, 2004, 13:45
My sister has Bloodlust, and I'm sure i could gank it for a day, it's on DVD, so that's pretty rockin.

Random Memory: first time I saw Bloodlust was when they were airing it at the Avon in providence, that was a BADASS movie to see on the big scren, let me tell you... hooo boy.

But yea, I can supply bloodlust.

Also, I like the idea of the "after hours" bit... or something. I'd like to show Hellsing, or other anime that might be too violent for the younger crowd, but it might have to be an "After Hours" showing or.. who knows. that sounds like it'd be dirty.. maybe the same idea, with just the "Adult Swim" tag attached =D

ALso, as for Live Action films, I have access to a nice movie called "Storm Riders" it's a freakin good Live Action movie. I know, I know, it prolly sounds somethin like a bad kung fu flick, but I honoestly think that with what they had, they did a REALLY good job of making something similar to a live action Anime O_O

Some people have said it's just silly, but you have to realise the concept behind it, and it becomes less sillty.

But yea, I have that available. It's really good. Let's keep the ideas comin.

Hopefuly I'll have money to even ATTEND the first of these. =(

Also, Andy sudgested a spokesperson... Anyone got any ideas on that?

I would sudgest Brian, but he is already running a Forum, a web 'zine, and THEN has his normal life to attend to... =)

Also, gotta give somethin to someone else, can't have Brian runnin EVERYTHING

/me chuckles.

May 14th, 2004, 15:01
Well, I'd nominate Jen because she did express interest in PMing Andy about everything that's going on. But with work and everything she might not be able to attend all the events. I think we should make a list of dates, send them to Andy and then decide what to show on those dates.

Ryan, you'd be a good choice to do this as well. Whoever wants to grab it, just be sure to let Andy and I know.

Oh yeah, Ryan... my name is spelled with a "Y". :]

Okay.. okay...

Sorry =)

Bryan, I normally get it right... and you'd think, that since I spell my name with a Y as well, I would get it?

Bah, my bad =)

Me or Jen would work. Anyone else have a say? I dislike the whole "voting for self" thing, seems pretentious and makes me look like I think I'm some kind of awesome spectical... spicti...spictica... thing. =D

If it ran on wensdays, I could more than likely make it to them, as... we have noted before, RyAn has no life. But, paying for them... that would be a different story. I am a sad sad poor poor man. So... if that would be an issue, I would have to say.... yeeaaa.

Anyhoo...

Seems like our big contendors for movies at the moment are..

Princess Mononoke
Cowboy Beebop (The Movie)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

As far as Movies go... Also, I THINK it's been said already, but Spirited Away would be a really good one to watch. I personally enjoyed it MUCHLY, and it'd be a good "All Ages" showing.

Mayhaps a vote... Or a poll... should be created...? Mayhaps Mayhaps....

Anime screenings would be fun. There could be a list and if like 10 people brought different anime if possible that would be great. You could watch like 1 or 2 episodes and also make some money that would be cool. If anyone has any ideas for a day tell me please! ^___^
