So I bought Dawn of Souls with Christmas money, thinking it'd be nothing special.
But I actually kinda like it.

Anyone who's played the older ("real") versions of FFI and FFII will be taken aback at first; in FFI the magic system is totally different, using MP instead of spells/level/day, and in FFII stats don't decrease as others increase. I've never played FFII before DoS; the whole balancing stats out thing didn't appeal to me very much.

FFI allows mages to actually USE their magic, making them far more effective than they ever were in the original. And they were effective enough in boss fights anyway, but now they're actually useful a lot more often. Of course, this DOES somewhat (a lot) decrease the overall challenge of the game. (That might be because the first DoS party I used was two fighters and two black mages, which is way too powerful given the myriad new healing items like hi potions and megalixirs that were added.)
FFI also adds four extra dungeons with powerful bosses from later FF's III-VI. The dungeons have special treasures and equipment, and the items dropped by the megabosses are very powerful and rewarding.

I'm still in the midst of playing FFII, so I can't really say too much about that. But I definitely enjoyed FFI, even though I thought I'd hate it at first because of the MP.

Any thoughts? Or ideas for awesome parties? =p
Keep in mind two fighters and two black mages. It's fun using Haste and Temper enough to do 3000 with a single attack against the last boss. :D

My brother said that the game went from being REALLY hard, the original, to really easy. Too easy. He breezed through it faster than any RPG he had played before.

Well yes, it IS rather easy, mostly in the sense that it doesn't require assloads of time to complete every sidequest. The sidequests consist of the extra dungeons added for DoS. FF1 didn't have sidequests; the game itself was *gasp* the most important part.

And you can MAKE FF1 challenging or easy, depending on the party you choose. FF1 was an actual game, not the bs eye candy that Squeenix has been dumping out.

I actually liked using levels of magic instead of MP in the first few FFs (particularly in FF3). Not to sound nerdy, but it kept a little of the D&D roots to how RPGs started out. It's a shame that style MP was weaned out after a while (unless, of course, you play more PC RPGs).

Also, all the music in DoS had a very rushed, cheezy Midi sound to it. Comparing them to the FF Origins versions, they would have just been better off trying to port that music instead. They seemed to like to use the trumpet synth a bit too much, and alot of instruments sounded out of place - sort of in the same way how Working Designs put way too much flute synth in Lunar Lengends' music.

Other than those, I think they did a decent job with the port - although personally I think they should have waited and worked on releasing it with FF3 in the mix as well. They've kept an official translation of that game from us for long enough, no?

So true. So true. And the I agree about the D&D roots stuff. I love playing D20 games with my group, and I think there should be more video games that share more ideas with D&D.

Please refrain from mentioning terrible FF games.
(Anything with a number higher than VI or the phrases "Tactics Advance," "Mystic Quest," "Crystal Chronicles," or that is played on non-Advance Game Boy.)

For some reason, I consider FFX the only exception to this rule. Of course, my rule is an adjusted version of your rule, in which the highest number is VIII. With the exception of X, I regard VIII as the last fun FF game. Pretty much all other PS2 (or insert other current generation console here) Square or SquareEnix games were crap though. I'm really not liking many PS2 RPGs, as a whole. The only ones I really had any interest in were the ones that stressed gameplay, like Grandia Xtreme, and to a lesser extent, Star Ocean 3.

And to extend on my reasoning behind the FFX exception a bit, in its defense I'll say that while it did stress mostly on eye candy, it was just as fun and addicting to play as just about any other FF. Just because a game looks great doesn't make it suck, after all. I had just as much fun crossing the sphere board and collecting Aeons in X as I did collecting Espers and maxing out their abilities in FFVI.

Having beaten I,II,VI,VII,VIII,IX,Tactics, and Tactics advance, I am totally final fantasied out. I'm personally sick of the game. Its the same thing, time and time again. OMG EVIL! Save the World!

FFXI was fun for a while, but lost its charm after a couple months.

And whats the deal with FFXII being real-time action fighting? If i wanted to play Kingdom Hearts, id f***ing play Kingdom Hearts.

Don't even get me started on Chain of Memories >_<;;;. UGH!

I agree, FF's lost their charm rapidly with me. I beat 7 and 6 and then called it quits.

Personally, I don't see a problem with 12 being real-time action fighting, it might be a good change. And plus, I've played Kingdom Hearts, and it isn't THAT impressive. I find adventuring with Donald and Goofy to be a little demeaning, and also outright annoying.

If anything, a combination of Final Fantasy quality, hopefully decent plot, teriffic graphics, and some new fun action should remove your and my "tiredness" of the Final Fantasy series.

Love Always,
~Garrett

Having completed every FF except XI (which I refuse to play on account of I was done with MMORPGs 3 years ago when I left EQ), I say Square should just retire the series now.

What I think they should have done was made a sub-series, starting with XII, especially since they decided to so drastically change the battle system in that one. Hell, from the looks of things, they should just call XII "FF: Crystal Chronicles 2". Sure, the story wouldn't continue from the first game, but when has an FF (outside of the horrendus FFX-2) ever done that? I say this would be the best corse of action. FFCC was a terrible game, so let them continue letting everyone know that FFXII will continue its legacy by using its name.

I mean, seriously, are they just going to keep going up in number? That was already getting old when X was released. If they actually plan on using the same name style for future successors I think the series will start to lose its appeal, if it hasn't totally lost it already. I'm leaning towards the latter on this one. If you ask me, Kingdom Hearts was a great game.......if you're 12. It's sad that the game is starting to turn out as the default defining game of the Action RPG genre. It was hardly the first, and it's quite far from the best.

Hey, I was just continuing your banter. No need to worry, I had no future intentions of continuing. Just figured I'd put in my two cents - I just have a tendancy to write needlessly long posts.

I'm current playing through FF1 with 4 white mages..it might take me a little while. I beat FFII the other day. The stat system is a little unbalanced. The magic system is what bugs me. It can take forever to get a Lv.16 Ultima. Not that you need it or anything, its just that its Ultima. It shouldn't do 30-40 Damage at level 1. And The Soul of Rebirth is hard. If you didn't spend time raising Minwu, Josef, or Ricard, start another game. SoR is unforgiving. You try fighting Ultima Weapon with 2 characters under 2000 HP lol.
